1. Search

Suppose you want to travel from Bern, Switzerland to Berlin, Germany.

Start typing "Bern" in the "From" search box. As you type, the names of the available locations will be displayed in the auto-complete box.

Exact location matches are shown under "Best results" and ordered by city size, while names which do not match exactly are shown under the name of the country they are in. Select "Bern, Switzerland" from the list.

Repeat in the "To" search box to select "Berlin".

To the right of the search boxes, you can specify the date and time that you want to leave Bern.

2. Choose

Trip Options

routeRANK will now search for different travel options for your journey:

  • Car icon by car
  • Train icon by train
  • Plane icon by plane

For the plane journeys, it will also show you how to get to and from the airport (what we call airport transfer options).

Furthermore, it will search for flights between several airports near Bern and Berlin.

Results will begin to appear one by one. The progress of the search is shown in the progress bar:

The progress bar also displays information about the search:

  • car route providers searched
  • train providers searched
  • flight agents searched
  • airports searched

Results Presentation

Results can be sorted by several criteria by clicking on the arrows (sorting arrow) next to the column names at the top of the results table. In the example below, the rows are sorted by price in ascending order, as indicated by the dark blue top arrow in that column.

sort options

Each results row shows a summary of the trip information. To see more trip details, expand the row by clicking on the expand row symbol symbol in the left-most column, or on button in the right-most column.

The expanded row shows you information about each part of the journey which uses the same transport means. Car and train routes have only one transport means for the entire journey, whereas flight routes are divided into three parts:

  1. transfer to the departure airport with car, train, or shuttle
  2. flight with plane
  3. transfer from the arrival airport with car, train, or shuttle

Each part of the journey may have several legs. These are indicated by a number in the transport means picture. For more details, please see the FAQ entry What are the numbers in the 'Means' column?

Results Options

On the results page, to the right of the search box, there is a list of options which allow you to refine and personalize your search results.

  • Airport selection
  • Currency selection
  • Customize car
  • Transfer selection

Please see the FAQ entry How do I use the Options and Filtering? for more details about these options.

3. Book

The last column of the results table provides links for booking your trip, finding more information directly on a provider's website, or offsetting the CO2 emissions of your trip.
